Limitations

The Harder Foundation makes grants for environmental and conservation work by nonprofit organizations that are qualified under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code as public charities.  We do not make grants to individuals or for-profit corporations.  Moreover, the Foundation does not support:

•  Agriculture issues
•  Book, film, or video production
•  Capital construction projects
•  Environmental education
•  Fiscal agency arrangements
•  Land acquisition or land trust projects
•  Local land management or restoration efforts
•  National policy research
•  Transportation issues
•  Urban and suburban projects

Proposals for research will be considered only when they are in direct support of concrete, well-defined strategies that take advantage of a specific opportunity to address a pressing environmental problem.

In addition, the Foundation does not make grants to organizations that are currently operating with an IRS designation as a 509(a)(3) supporting organization.

The Foundation cannot designate any portion of its grants for use in influencing legislation.  The Foundation's general support grants to Section 501(c)(3) public charities may be used to support a grantee's overall operations, even if the grantee engages in lobbying as part of its programs.  Foundation funds may never be used to support or oppose candidates for political office.
